Estimated vs Actual Meter Readings: Why the Difference Matters
Your energy bill may be based on estimated readings rather than your actual energy use. Understanding the difference could help explain why you're paying more than expected.

Your meter records how much energy you use, but the readings used to calculate your bill don't always come directly from your meter.
Sometimes, suppliers estimate your consumption instead. While this is common, it can create differences between what you've actually used and what you're being charged.
What's the Difference?
Actual Meter Readings
These are readings taken directly from your meter, either manually or through a functioning smart meter. They provide a more accurate record of your energy consumption.
Estimated Meter Readings
These are readings calculated by your supplier when actual readings aren't available. They are generally based on previous consumption patterns and may not reflect your current energy use.
How Can Estimated Readings Affect Your Bill?
Estimated readings can affect your energy costs in different ways.
1. You Could Be Paying More Than Expected
If your supplier estimates that you've used more energy than you actually have, your bill may be higher than it should be.
2. You Could Be Underpaying Without Realising
If your estimated consumption is too low, the difference may accumulate and result in a larger bill when actual readings become available.
3. Your Consumption May Be Difficult to Understand
When your bills rely on estimates, it can be harder to identify how much energy you're actually using and whether your costs are reasonable.
Does an Estimated Reading Mean Your Bill Is Wrong?
Not necessarily.
Estimated readings are a normal part of energy billing, particularly when suppliers don't have access to recent meter readings.
However, an estimate that differs significantly from your actual consumption may result in charges that need reviewing.
Even when your bill is based on actual readings, errors in consumption calculations or tariff charges can still affect what you pay.
That's why an actual reading alone doesn't guarantee that your bill is correct.
